COVID-19 day 199: 📈 59,692 new cases, 1,854 new deaths (US): 06 August 2020

Global cases cross 18M, US deaths cross 160K; a numbers-only edition

It’s day 199 since the first case of coronavirus disease was announced in the United States. The daily case numbers continue to decline slightly while deaths per day increase. Apologies for continued lag in the three issues/week report. Hopefully, next week I’ll feel better. (Some details in the next issue, for those who are curious.)

🦠 Thursday, Johns Hopkins reported 4,883,582 (59,692 new) cases and 160,104 (1,854 new) deaths, an increase of 1.24% and 1.17%, respectively, since Wednesday. A week ago, the daily numbers increased by 1.53% and 0.89%, respectively.

  - seven-day average: 57,075 cases and 1,174 deaths 
  - 3.28% cases leading to death
  - case rate, 148 per 10,000; death rate, 5 per 10,000

• One week ago
  - seven-day average: 65,462 cases and 1,108 deaths 
  - 3.38% cases leading to death
  - case rate, 136 per 10,000; death rate, 5 per 100,000

Note: the seven-day average is important because dailies vary due to factors other than actual case numbers, particularly over a weekend.

• CDC: 4,802,491 (53,685 new) cases & 157,631 (1,320 new) deaths

The virus was not created in a lab and the weight of evidence is that it was not released intentionally. Although early reports tied the outbreak to a market in Wuhan, China, analyses of genomic data have suggested that the virusdeveloped elsewhere.
